Duties and responsibilities

Opticians fit and dispense eyeglasses for patients based upon prescription written by ophthalmologist or optometrists. They also help some of the patients pick out the frames and then they measure their face to the distance between the corneas of the eye so the lenses can fit perfectly. Opticians specialize in fitting contact lenses and sometimes artificial eyes.

Average salary: $19,000 - $40,000   

Students should take high school courses in algebra, physics and mechanical drawing. A high school diploma is necessary or a GED certificate to begin training to be an optician.
